Kaimur was created from the Bhabua subdivision of Shahabad, an earlier district of Bihar. The district can be divided into two parts namely hilly area and plaina area. While the hilly area is the Kaimur plateau, the plain area is flanked by the Karmanasha and the Durgawati rivers.
