According to the Indian calendar (Panchang), every third year consists of thirteen months, which is also known as Malmas (or Adhimas). There is a mythological belief that this month is highly sacred for religious activities, and all Hindu gods and goddesses reside and wander in Rajgir during this extra month (Adhimas). To please the 33 crore (330 million) deities and to attain their desired blessings, sages, saints, and pilgrims stay here for the entire month. During the Malmas Mela (fair), devotees take a holy dip in the 22 sacred ponds (Kunds) and 52 streams located in Rajgir. A fair has been organized here on this occasion since ancient times. Lakhs of devotees attend this fair, and after performing prayers and worship, they enjoy the festivities. Filled with Hindu religious discourses and prayers, this city remains crowded with sages, seers, and devotees for a month. Foreign tourists also visit on this occasion. Extensive preparations have been made by the Department of Tourism, Government of Bihar, and the District Administration, Nalanda, for the convenience and safety of the devotees, so that everyone coming here can have a better experience.
