The Ganga River harbours a rare species of aquatic dolphin. The Gangetic Dolphin, as it is commonly known, is one of the four freshwater species of dolphins in the world.
In south Asia, the dolphin is found in the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus rivers. The dolphins are easily recognizable by their long slender snouts lined with large, visible teeth. They are practically blind and use echolocation to hunt and navigate. In an effort to conserve the species, the 50-km stretch of the river from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon was designated as a dolphin sanctuary in 1991.
