Pitripaksha at Gaya Ji holds immense religious significance in Hinduism. This sacred period is dedicated to performing pind daan (ritual offerings) for ancestors. It is believed that by performing these rituals in Gayaji, the souls of ancestors attain salvation and peace in the afterlife. Pitripaksha starts from Bhadrapada Purnima and ends on Ashwin Amavasya, also known as Mahalaya.
There are 48 major sacred sites in Gayaji for pind daan, the most important being the Phalgu River, Vishnupad Temple, Panch Tirtha, Sita Kund, and Gaya Shiro Mani Temple. Rituals are carried out on the banks of the Phalgu River, and priests guide the devotees through the process of tarpan and pind daan, which are essential for ancestral peace. According to legends, Lord Rama performed the pind daan of his father, King Dasharatha, in Gayaji. It is also believed that Goddess Sita offered pind daan at the Phalgu River, and that’s why the tradition of Sita Pind Daan still continues.
During Pitripaksha, Gayaji becomes a hub of spiritual energy and devotion. The town sees a massive influx of devotees and priests engaged in rituals, prayers, and sacred offerings. The government of Bihar and local administration arrange special facilities like shelter homes, food distribution, medical camps, and traffic management during this time.
