Shrawani Mela: A Vibrant Pilgrimage in Bihar

Shrawani Mela

Shrawani Mela, an annual Hindu festival, is celebrated with great fervor in the state of Bihar, India. The festival occurs during the Hindu month of Shravan (July-August) and attracts millions of devotees, primarily to the towns of Sultanganj and Deoghar. The primary attraction is the journey to the Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar, Jharkhand, where devotees offer holy water to Lord Shiva.

Devotees, known as Kanwariyas, undertake a rigorous pilgrimage during Shrawani Mela. The journey starts from Sultanganj, where pilgrims collect holy water from the Ganges River. They then walk barefoot, covering approximately 105 kilometers, to Deoghar. Throughout this journey, the pilgrims chant "Bol Bam" and carry decorated pitchers filled with holy water, often suspended from a bamboo stick balanced on their shoulders.

The rituals involve strict adherence to purity and austerity. Devotees often wear saffron-colored clothes. The pilgrimage is seen as penance and a way to seek blessings from Lord Shiva.

Apart from the religious aspects, Shrawani Mela also features various cultural programs and activities. Folk music, dance performances, and religious discourses are organized to entertain and educate the pilgrims. These activities not only add to the festive atmosphere but also promote the rich cultural heritage of Bihar.

Shrawani Mela is not just a religious event but a celebration of faith, devotion, and community spirit. The Bihar Tourism Department’s efforts to provide essential facilities and ensure the well-being of the pilgrims play a crucial role in the successful execution of this grand festival. The meticulous planning and execution of services reflect the department's commitment to preserving the cultural and religious heritage of the state while ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all devotees.
