Darbhanga district takes its name from its only town and district headquarters Darbhanga. The district is said to have been founded by one Darbhangi Khan. Some others believe that the name of the place has been derived from Dwar Banga, which means the 'door of Bengal'. There are a number of beautiful palaces and well laid-out complexes built by the royal family. This district its famous for its trade in fish, mango and makhana. Popular celebration of the district include Kartik Purnima mela, Dussehra mela and Diwali mela.
